| FAST AND ABSTINENCE FOR ASH WED. AND LENT (posted 2/12/2010 5:19:43 PM) | ||||||||||||||||||
|
Through the prophet Isaiah God calls for a fast that will free the oppressed, feed and clothe the needy and embrace the poor (Isaiah 58). In Matthew’s Gospel we are warned against fasting only to impress others (Matthew 6:16). Fasting can be penitential (offering a sacrifice to God), it can an act of solidarity (helping us appreciate and share the burdens that others face everyday), and it can help to loosen our tendency to cling to things, people or circumstance. This Lent, as we sharpen our focus on God, we might fast from gossip, from impatience, from extra comforts. But, at a minimum, the Bishops of the United States prescribe: +Everyone over age 14 is gravely bound to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and on the Fridays of Lent including Good Friday. +Everyone over 18 and younger than 60 is to fast by limiting themselves to a single full meal on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, while the other two meals on those days are to be light. Our Bishops also encourage everyone to participate in Operation Rice Bowl, which has aided countless hungry people here in the Archdiocese as well as throughout our nation and our world. Supplies are in Church and Chapel. |
